Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Denver! It’s April 2, so you can let your guard down now. But we gotta hand it to Denver Parks and Rec, a Civic Center Park zip line would be dope 😉

Today's Must-Know

🍿 Sloan’s Lake Alamo Drafthouse Workers Hit the Picket Line

Workers at Alamo Drafthouse in Sloan’s Lake plan to strike beginning tomorrow, April 3, (with no planned end date) over the dine-in movie theater chain’s new QR code ordering system. Of the theater's 75 unionized employees, 94% voted to authorize the strike. [CWA 7777]

  • Some context: The Texas-based movie theater chain announced in January that all Alamo locations would replace their pen-and-paper ordering service with a QR code system in order to “reduce distractions.”
  • What’s the problem? Theater staff have called the new system overcomplicated, disruptive, and a source of friction between guests and employees. They also allege the new system is a harbinger of staff cuts. [Denver Post 🔒]
  • Not just Denver: Workers at the Alamo Drafthouse in Westminster recently voted 40-2 to unionize largely in response to the QR code system rollout. [CWA 7777]
  • What’s this mean for movie-goers? It’s unclear. During a four-day strike last year to protest layoffs at Alamo locations across the metro area (and the nation), workers on the picket line asked patrons not to go in, while service inside was significantly limited. Following that strike, three of the 11 laid off employees at Sloan’s Lake were reinstated. [Denverite]

🏆 Playoffs, Here We Come

The Phoenix Suns fell to the Orlando Magic on Tuesday, officially securing our Denver Nuggets a spot in the NBA playoffs for an eighth consecutive year. The Colorado Avalanche clinched their NHL playoff position last month. Both the NBA and NHL playoffs are set to start on April 18. [9News]

🪧 Sheridan Teachers Union Strike Heats Up

Classes are canceled for the rest of the week for schools in the Sheridan School District (serving Sheridan and parts of Englewood and Littleton) while nearly 100 staff and faculty strike. The local teachers union and district leaders have been gridlocked over contract negotiations for almost a year. [CO Sun]

  • What are the demands? The union is asking the district to reinstate the local teachers union’s collective bargaining agreement and to recognize “education support professionals,” such as bus drivers and janitors, as part of the union.
  • Tensions are high: Tuesday night Sheridan police were called when things heated up after protesters were shut out from a board meeting. Union members walked off the job Wednesday morning.

🌷 No Annual Tulip Display at the Botanic Gardens This Spring

The Denver Botanic Gardens will be lacking its usually stunning display of 10,000-plus tulips this season due to a tulip fungal disease that infected the garden's collection of bulbs. The tulips likely won’t return until spring 2029 to allow the soil to fully recover. Instead, a pastel display of daffodils, hyacinths, and lilies will take their place. [Denver Post 🔒]

🥤 Is Polis Planning a Statewide Soda Ban?

Gov. Jared Polis is reportedly preparing to announce an executive order to ban soda and other sugary drinks from taxpayer-funded functions (TBD on what exactly that might include) throughout the state, according to insiders claiming to be familiar with the plan. (The governor’s office has not confirmed details.) The order would broaden previous efforts by Polis to ban the purchase of soda using SNAP benefits, which faced pushback from lawmakers who said that would shame and stigmatize low-income families. 🤑 Who is Betting on Local Elections?

Depending on who you ask, Kalshi, Polymarket, and the other new prediction betting markets are either the hottest trend in tech or harbingers of a serotonin-addled dystopia. But the facts are clear, someone is betting hundreds of thousands of dollars on the outcomes of local political races, including the super tight Democratic primary in CD8. Contributor David Sirota joins Paul Karolyi and Bree Davies on the podcast to untangle the mysterious web of high-stakes trading. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
