Your Daily Guide

Happy Friday, Denver! This just in: Taco Bell has released a new menu item, and it looks really good. The Gordita Crunch Duos are on the menu now, and you can get them with chicken or carne asada. This is big news in my world, especially for the weekend 😋

⚠️ I-70 Closures This Weekend and Next

For my friends that might be bopping around the west metro the next two weekends, there are a couple planned closures of I-70 that might impact your travel. CDOT is rebuilding a bridge on I-70 in Wheat Ridge, and there will be closures this weekend and next for it. Both are expected to last up to 83 hours, so check out the details below to avoid getting caught in the 30-minute delays CDOT is warning about. You can check the progress of this project and see how it's looking on the camera views to help plan your travel. [CDOT]

  • For detours, times, and other important details: Check out the CDOT site to see how your routes might be impacted, they have info for detours both for vehicles and bikes/pedestrians!
  • For some more casual weekend reading: Check out ✨The National Bridge Inventory ✨Colorado edition, to see what’s up with the integrity of our bridges in general. That list of deficient bridges will make you appreciate a bridge repair project!

What Denver's Talking About

🚍 BRT Gets Rolling

New services from RTD are rolling out later this month, including SkyRide, expanded T line, and the first launch of the East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit. Starting Sept. 27, BRT will begin along Colfax Avenue, and the Route 15 and 15L will use the new center bus lanes between Broadway and Colfax. Bus riders will get to try out the new center stations on Colfax. [9News]

  • SkyRide: This service will launch on Sept. 27 between Longmont and DIA. Route AL will offer service every hour starting at 8th and Coffman, and stops include the Niwot and Lafayette Park-n-Rides.
  • T Line: This service will operate starting Sept 27 from Lincoln Station to Alameda Station, taking the place of some of the former H line services. It will run every 15-30 minutes during peak times.

🧥16th Street Needs … a Burlington Coat Factory?

Burlington, formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, is exploring the possibility of leasing the ground floor of the Denver Dry Goods Building on 16th Street, formerly known as the 16th Street Mall. A developer working on the possible deal said that any potential lease would hinge on funds from the Denver Downtown Development Authority. Burlington and its partners reportedly requested $3.4 million to help with the build out of the space. [Denver Post 🔒]

🛒 Big-Ass Costco Incoming

Littleton’s got a giant Costco on the way — a whopping 159,000 square feet is currently under construction near South Broadway and West Mineral Avenue. This will be Colorado’s 17th Costco, and it is slated to open in 2027. Brian Garner, the economic development manager for Littleton, said this is “the biggest project that Littleton has seen in probably decades.” He told 9News it will be “an economic engine” for the city. • In that same area: This week, Littleton City Council approved a 30-year tax incentive to bring Scheels, a sporting goods retailer known for its indoor ferris wheels and giant aquariums, to the same Mineral Place Development as the Costco. Its expected opening date would be 2029. [CBS Colorado]

🕊️ New Creative Space Honors Christian Glass

A new artist space called Creative Grounds opened this week in Lyons in honor of Christian Glass, a 22-year-old who was shot and killed by a deputy of the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office in 2022. His family used the funds from the settlement with the sheriff’s office to open the space as a way to honor their son’s artistic inclinations. The space has multiple rooms for different art mediums, a cafe, and free classes for teens and young adults led by local experts. [Westword]

  • A personal note from me: Before I joined the team at City Cast, I was a reporter in Clear Creek County covering the Christian Glass trial. I’ll never forget sitting down for an interview with his parents, Sally and Simon Glass, and hearing the absolute devastation they went through, and how it rocked the small towns in Clear Creek. Christian’s family was awarded the largest police settlement in Colorado history, and the officer who shot him was sentenced to three years. I think reporting on this case changed me in a lot of ways, but it really taught me about the value of community and allowing people the space to gather and grieve. This creative space feels like an important next step in that, to me. ❤️‍🩹

Denver Health rebuilt his hip. He climbed Everest with it.

A Vail skiing accident shattered Rich Draves' hip and leg. Denver Health's Level I trauma center and Denver's only certified Orthopedic Center of Excellence rebuilt it. Two years later, this mountaineer stood atop Mount Everest. Draves calls the care "the best result possible." Whatever mountain you're chasing, Denver Health has your back — literally, and every step of the way.

Read Rich's story.

Have a great weekend! And stay out of trouble. Don’t be like this guy running from the cops on a Veo scooter! (okay, I laughed)
