From muralism and sculptural work to theater productions and protest songs, art played a central role in the national Chicano Civil Rights movement. In Denver, the 

— an organization that embraced liberation through political, educational, social, and cultural means — was heavily structured around the arts, as seen here with its Ballet Chicano de Aztlán dance troupe. Some young women and men who were part of the Crusade For Justice traveled to Mexico to study with the Ballet Folklórico Nacional de México and bring that knowledge back to their Denver community.

A Day In Denver History

Halloween is next week! Now’s the prime time to carve your pumpkin so it stays fresh and festive looking for trick-or-treaters. Use these creative carving hacks to perfect and preserve your pumpkin masterpiece.

If you haven’t picked your pumpkin yet, make sure you go for one that is firm and ripe (it should sound hollow when you knock on it).

Consider using an ice cream scoop instead of a regular spoon to get the guts out of your pumpkin. Trust us, it will save you a little elbow grease. Also, the thinner you make your pumpkin’s walls, the easier they will be to carve!

Use a dry erase marker to sketch your design (instead of a pen or Sharpie) so you can wipe away leftover markings for a cleaner look. Or, tape a stencil to your pumpkin face, use a thumbtack to poke holes along the outline, then remove the stencil and cut along the holes.

Rub petroleum jelly along the cut edges of your design to help lock in moisture. During the day, keep your Jack-o-lantern out of direct sunlight. And consider an LED candle or string lights instead of a traditional candle, which can dry out your pumpkin quicker.

The story of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old Black boy who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955, is back in the news thanks to the big Hollywood production “Till,” which is 

. But did you know that Denver once had the country’s only physical monument to Till? 


, a local bowling alley owner named Herman Hamilton had the idea for a tribute back in the ’70s. He worked with a sculptor and the city to commission a statue depicting Till walking with Martin Luther King Jr. that was installed in City Park in time for the country’s bicentennial in 1976. 

Controversial from the start due to the disproportionately large size of MLK Jr.’s head, the statue was removed and eventually replaced. The original stands today at the Friendly Harbor Community Center in Pueblo after bouts of vandalism, defacement, and various stints gathering mothballs in storage.
