What’s the Fourth of July without fireworks? They’re the heart and soul of this age-old American tradition. While some towns and counties are making the switch to drone shows, the bangs and booms of traditional firework displays will still take center stage this weekend. Just make sure you’re enjoying the festivities safely, courteously, and legally 👇

Know Your Local Firework Laws

  • All fireworks that leave the ground are illegal in Colorado unless part of a professional display. That means no firecrackers, bottle rockets, lady fingers, Roman candles, mortars, etc.
  • However, ground fireworks like sparklers, snakes, fountains, spinners, and smoke bombs are permitted in certain municipalities — but FYI, Denver is not one of them. If you have to ignite it, it’s illegal here.

Firework Safety Tips

  • In places where street fireworks are permitted, they should always be supervised by a designated, sober adult.
  • Always read and follow the instructions on the packaging.
  • Keep spectators at a distance and never aim fireworks at anyone.
  • Light only one firework at a time and never approach or reignite a firework that doesn’t light the first time.

How to Dispose of Used Fireworks

  • Keep a garden hose at the ready, along with a fire extinguisher nearby — some fires cannot be extinguished with water alone.
  • Smoldering fireworks left in a trash bin can start a fire. Dunk fireworks in water after use for at least 20 minutes, or overnight if possible. This also applies to fireworks that may have been lit but didn’t go off.
  • Fireworks are not recyclable, they go in the trash.

Be Mindful of Pets and Vets

  • Sudden, loud noises from firework shows can cause anxiety in animals. If there are fireworks happening near your home, keep pets somewhere indoors that is quiet, safe, and soothing. Also make sure your pets’ identification tags are up to date in case they manage to bolt.
  • Fireworks can also trigger PTSD for military veterans. Be sure to check in with the vets in your life and be mindful of the people around you if you’re participating in street fireworks.
