This week, we’re visiting Old South Gaylord Street. Situated between East Tennessee and East Mississippi avenues. This little slice of Wash Park is packed with restaurants, bars, independent shops, and more.
The Cookery at Myrtle Hill
If you’re a sucker for ambiance, this hot brunch spot has it! From the mint green walls and antique tin ceilings to the collection of built-ins and vintage diner counter stools, this storefront eatery is both stylish and welcoming. The food is fantastic and well worth the wait — try the smoked salmon avocado toast or quiche du jour.
Wish Boutique
If you miss the old-school customer service and expertise of a department store, this local women’s clothing and accessories shop is for you. It has an excellent selection of fresh fits, cool sunglasses, stylish purses, and more, with salespeople who know how to pull together a great look.

Wash Park Grille
Whether you’re pulled up to the bar, hanging out on one of the two plant-donning patios, or plopped down in a comfy chair in their lounge area, this community watering hole is a great spot for a drink. The Italian-inspired menu is top-notch too, but the restaurant and bar’s plethora of seating options makes it a great place to grab a cocktail with a friend or watch the game.
Devil’s Food Bakery
Myrtle Hill owner Angela Pilloud’s original Old South Gaylord staple, is still going strong serving up fine coffee and pastries. (Pro-tip: It’s also a great place to get old timey candy if, like me, you’re into wax bottles, candy buttons, and Mary Janes!)
