Denver changes fast — but the enduring spirit of Colfax has long kept Denverites grounded. As Colfax Week continues here at City Cast Denver, we’re spotlighting businesses on the central area of the strip that have been around for at least 30 years and exemplify Colfax’s extraordinarily unique character that always keeps us coming back.
🍽️ Bastien’s
This vintage steakhouse and cocktail bar began life in 1958 when the Bastien family tore down their modest drive-in restaurant and replaced it with a swanky supper club. Its Googie architecture embodies pure Rat Pack-era vibes, and the spot’s twice baked potatoes, wedge salads, and famous sugar-rubbed steaks are always worth a trip to the strip.
Built in 1913, the Bluebird has been home to Vaudeville shows, hosted both Hollywood and adult movies, and been a must-see destination for live music since 1994. This intimate venue serves as a launching pad for local acts and often catches big stars on their way to the top — Adele, The White Stripes, Billie Eilish, The Lumineers, and more have all graced the retro room’s stage.

Since 1993, Bound by Design has hosted both local and nationally known tattoo artists. Before body art was seen as a respected artform, this shop was helping to establish tattooing and piercing as a safe and legitimate industry. But Colfax has always been a haven for tattooing — the great Peter Tat-2’s roots in Denver go back to the 1970s, and shops like Lifetime and Certified Tattoo Studios also carry on the tradition.
Self-proclaimed as the “oldest operating music venue” in Denver, this dive bar with a stage is legendary. The best shows at the Lair are cramped and raucous, with everything from punk and hip hop concerts to comedy shows and DJ nights bringing big crowds. If you don’t get a beer spilled on you, it’s not an authentic Lion’s Lair experience!
Herbs & Arts has been serving the divine souls of Colfax prior to witchcraft going mainstream, selling candles for spells, housemade tinctures and herbal cures, and plenty of books, jewelry, and crystals. This metaphysical spot also offers tarot, ancient Chinese divination, and astrology readings for witches, wizards, and other curious folks looking for otherworldly guidance.
